Choirs and ensembles

Pre-Prep

There is a choir of some 30 pupils in the Pre-Prep School which really introduces pupils to ensemble singing, blend and team work. They learn a variety of repertoire ranging from nursery rhymes to Christmas songs. Pupils are encouraged to gain a sense of occasion and have a number of short presentations throughout the year. A smaller chamber choir in the top year works at a more challenging repertoire.

Our St. Paul’s string group teaching scheme provides opportunities for pupils to play violin and cello and to partake in a small string orchestra. The orchestra performs in a concert each term.

Prep

The Prep School has three choirs: P1 & P2 choir, P3 – P5 choir and a small chamber choir of pupils from P3 – P5. Again, the emphasis is on good, blended singing and sound intonation.

Pupils learn to sing in parts and to sing with notated scores. Proper child friendly repertoire informs the repertoire and the chamber choir joins pupils in the Senior School and the adult choral society in concerts including more challenging and mainstream choral society repertoire.

Concert opportunities include lunchtime concerts, assemblies, carol service and trips to the charities that the school supports. There is a string orchestra which rehearses weekly and performs in two concerts per year. There is an annual rock and pop concert and a biennial production of a musical.

Recent shows include Bugsy Malone and Oliver.

Senior

The Senior School has a strong mixed voice choir which rehearse two mornings a week. It covers a wider range of repertoire from sacred cantatas and Oratorio to songs from musicals. It sings at two concerts per year within the school (including the festival of lessons and carols) and also at the annual remembrance day service at the Anglican cathedral.

It benefits from singing alongside professional singers and orchestral players, affording it access to an impressive range of repertoire. Recently, it has taken part in concerts with USP (University of São Paulo) and also the choir of Caius College, Cambridge.

There is a small chamber orchestra which meets weekly and tackles repertoire according to the resources of the membership. Ensemble skills and team work are encouraged.

There is an annual rock and pop concert and a biennial battle of the band competition. There is also a biennial production of a musical with the drama department. Recent shows have included South Pacific and My Fair Lady.
