Margaret Mee: an outstanding artist

Margaret Mee: an outstanding artist

We have always had the honour to receive in our school many distinguish and special people through our almost one century of history. One of those remarkable people was Margaret Mee, an artist, professor, botanist, and Paulean.

Margaret was born in England, in 1909, and came to Brazil to teach Arts at St. Paul’s School in 1952. It was here in São Paula that Mrs. Mee became a Brazilian botanic enthusiast and started her journey as a botanic artist.

Soon, Margaret started to study the Amazonian flora and its diversity of plants, flowers and more. She made more than 15 expeditions to Amazon Forest, her source of inspirations and one of her biggest interests. Also, Margaret was one of the first environmentalists who raised her voice about the enormous risks of the Amazon deforestations.

As a very prolific artist, Margaret Mee created more than 400 illustrations, and as a person, she also left ad huge legacy. Unfortunately, Mrs. Mee left us in 1988, living enough to make a difference in the world.

In 2013, the Brazilian film director Malu de Martino launched Margaret Mee e a flor da lua, a documentary about Margaret and her love for nature and art.

It's a pleasure to have a few of Mrs Mee's frames around the school until today.
